"ཨོཾ ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ བཛྲ གུ རུ པདྨ སིདྡྷི ཧཱུྃ"
(Om Ah Hum Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum)
Guru Rinpoche, or Padmasambhava, meaning "Born from a Lotus," is a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism, often called the second Buddha. In the 8th century, he played a crucial role in bringing Buddhism to Tibet, introducing Tantric practices that continue to shape the spiritual landscape today.
Invited by King Trisong Detsen, Guru Rinpoche faced numerous challenges to establish the first Buddhist monastery, Samye, while overcoming local spirits and deities resistant to Buddhism. His teachings became the foundation of the Nyingma school, Tibet’s oldest Buddhist tradition.
Guru Rinpoche is depicted in vibrant red or gold, symbolizing his enlightened power. Seated in a regal posture, he embodies spiritual mastery. In his right hand, he holds a vajra, symbolizing indestructibility. In his left, a skull cup filled with nectar represents wisdom and immortality. Draped over his shoulder is the khatvanga staff, signifying his control over life, death, and his connection to the spiritual realms.
